Our History
Room For Joy began creating rooms for chronically ill children in 2005. We are a 501(c)3 charitable organization with an effective exemption date of January 2007. Our room recipients are referred through the Childlife Departments at local children's hospitals. There is a waiting list of children at each hospital waiting for room makeovers. Rooms are completed as soon as funding permits.
In 2024 Room For Joy completed the 64th “official” room makeover with more than 10 “mini” makeovers for siblings. Custom furniture has been built to hide medical equipment, new flooring installed to insure a more hypoallergenic atmosphere and upgraded mattresses have been provided to help with comfort. Our goal is not only to provide a “dream” room for the child but to take special care to secure a healthy, medically appropriate space as well. Popcorn ceiling removal, low VOC paint and built in storage for medical supplies are a few more of the custom design elements that we have provided over the years.
In addition to the room makeover, we provide a “mini” vacation for the child and their family that allows them to remain stress free during the renovation weekend, as well as spend some well- deserved time away as a family. We continually hear from the parents that the complimentary weekend "staycation", which includes lodging, meals and activities, was an invaluable gift to their family. Many of our room recipients’ families are financially unable to have vacations or even eat a meal out, as a family. The special time they are provided helps them to “de-stress” and just spend the weekend enjoying each other.
